Rhabdomyolysis

Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of damaged skeletal muscle. The destruction or degeneration of skeletal muscle tissue (as from traumatic injury, excessive exertion, or stroke) that is accompanied by the release of muscle cell contents (as myoglobin and potassium) into the bloodstream resulting in hypovolemia, hyperkalemia, and sometimes acute renal failure.

SYMPTOMS

  • Pain areas: in the muscles
  • Whole body: fatigue, inability to exercise, water-electrolyte imbalance, or body ache
  • Muscular: cramping, muscle weakness, or delayed onset muscle soreness
  • Urinary: dark urine or insufficient urine production
  • Also common: kidney damage or muscle stiffness

CAUSES

  • Rhabdomyolysis is always triggered by muscle injury. This injury can have physical, chemical or genetic causes. Anything that damages the muscles can cause this condition. Possible causes include the following: trauma, heat, and exertion, genetic and metabolic disorders, 
  • Infection and inflammation,  medications and toxins
